Movies This Week: Sex and the Sands of Survival

in

Not a lot of new films out this week, with too many screens taken up by other blockbusters and the new hopefuls.  Many of the arthouse and indies are holding strong, and you know how I feel about those.

George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead -- Romero is at it again, with this Fantastic Fest 2009 selection pitting islanders against zombies. (Alamo Lamar)

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time -- Jake Gyllenhaal takes on a video game adaptation.  Is it worth it? Debbie knows, and you can read more in her review. (wide)

Sex and the City 2 -- The girls are back, but to find a story they're vacationing in the Middle East. Um. Yeah. Elizabeth saw it and lived to tell the tale; see her review for more. (wide)

Singam -- Bollywood concotion pitting a young policeman against a villian while he woos a businessman's daughter. (Cinemark Tinseltown 17)

Check our event calendar for special film events, and our personal picks below. Don't forget you can always alert us to special screenings, new film series, etc.

Debbie -- I'm looking forward to a special event at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz event on Thursday, June 3 -- not a film, but a sing-along including videos for one of my favorite bands, Queen. Queen contributed music directly to Highlander and Flash Gordon, although the most memorable Queen song in film is probably Bohemian Rhapsody in Wayne's World. Queen's 1984 "Radio Ga Ga" video was a homage to the classic silent film Metropolis.

Don -- Fifty years after its release, Psycho has lost none of its creepy appeal.  If you need a Norman Bates fix (or a bit of perspective on your relationship with your mother), check out Alfred Hitchcock's horror classic at the Paramount Theater on Tuesday at 7 pm and Wednesday at 9:25 pm.

Elizabeth --  Leonard Bernstein only scored three films, and Elia Kazan's On the Waterfront is one of them.  The award-winning film -- featuring Marlon Brando, Eva Marie Saint and one of my favorite character actors, Karl Malden -- is showing this weekend at the Paramount Theatre: Saturday at 7:25 pm and Sunday at 4:30 pm.

Jenn -- Marko Zaror is back in town after wowing the Fantastic Fest 2009 crowds with not only Mandrill but his impressive gymnastics at the award ceremony. Tonight, Undisputed III: Redemption and Mandrill play a special double feature, and I plan on being there, since I had to miss the film at FF, and despite the best efforts of all, it wasn't able to play a special screening during Cine Las Americas.

Jette -- If you haven't seen The Happy Poet yet, there's a fundraiser screening for the film next Thursday, June 3, that you won't want to miss.  Read Jenn's SXSW review for more details. I've just found out that your ticket also provides you with your choice between an eggless egg-salad sandwich or a hot dog, which is perfect to get you in the mood for this movie.
