Movies This Week: Fox and Old Dog Ninja Assassins

Why, yes, we are doing Movies This Week early. But it's also the start of the holidaze, with movies opening today and Thanksgiving feasts tomorrow, so Wednesday is the new Friday.
Fantastic Mr. Fox -- Wes Anderson's love child with the spirit of Roald Dahl is destined to top quite a few Best Of lists this year. The puppetry is mesmerizing, and you're sure to leave smiling. In short, it's cussing good. Read my review, and see once now so you're only slightly distracted when you go to the Alamo feast. After you see it once, you'll really want to see it again. It does hold up, and if you see movies on Thanksgiving, this is the movie to see.
Ninja Assassin -- Slick, dark Hollywood sword-porn. What it lacks in plot it makes up for in unimpressively outrageous fight scenes so dark you can barely see what's going on. Debbie saw it, and is willing to tell you more in her review.
Old Dogs -- Brought to us by the team behind Wild Hogs. Um. Yeah. If you really need to know more, read Debbie's review.
The Road -- Jette has seen this movie and will be reviewing it for Thursday -- she has hinted that it's fairly grim and relentless ... in the good way. You could see it on Thanksgiving and feel grateful that we're not in a post-apocalyptic nightmare, but you'll need a pick-me-up of some kind afterward.
Check our event calendar for special film events, and our personal picks below. Don't forget you can always alert us to special screenings, new film series, etc.
And now, our picks of the week:
Jette -- I'm trying to decide whether I'd rather see Fantastic Mr. Fox again on Thanksgiving day, which would be quite appropriate, or try to make time for Alamo's feast on Dec. 3. This is a perfect movie for a feast if you aren't seeing the film for the first time.
Debbie -- As a fan of post-apocalyptic films such as Children of Men and The Handmaid's Tale, I'm looking forward to seeing The Road with Viggo Mortensen. Opens today at the Arbor Cinema at Great Hills and the Alamo South Lamar.
Jenn -- Monsoon Wedding next Thursday. It's a great tale, and a fundraiser to boot.
