Movies This Week: House of No Impact Dreams

Meaning of Life

Austin Film Festival is barely over, and it's now Halloween weekend, complete with an extra hour of revelry possible, thanks to Daylight Saving Time ending. Not a whole lot of new films are coming out this weekend.

House of the Devil -- This homage to vintage horror, written and directed by Ti West, has more build up than body count.  Read Debbie's review

Michael Jackson's This Is It -- The much-anticipated concert/tribute film about the late Michael Jackson opened on Wednesday. From all reports from MJ fans, it's good.

No Impact Man -- This documentary is about the Beaven family, which decides to live for one year without electricity, toilet paper or anything that will leave a carbon footprint.

London Dreams -- Bollywood film about rock-and-roll dreams.

Check our event calendar for special film events, and Austin hosts a lot of them this week.  There is so much going on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday for Halloween, that there's is no excuse not to go see something this weekend. If you have any events you'd like us to list, contact us.

Our personal picks:

Debbie: "But Monsieur, it's just a wafer-thin mint!" If you know that movie quote or have always wondered where it came from, you don't want to miss the Big Screen Classic Signature Series feature this week, Monty Python's The Meaning of Life at Alamo Ritz.

Jenn:  Even with Dance of the Dead playing at Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar before the Zombie Prom, I still have to pick aGLIFF Presents The Long Haul on Sunday with Martha and Lavonne in attendance. Take an older couple, a beat-up Airstream, and a cross country move/sightseeing trip, and you'll laugh so hard your face hurts.  Directed by Austin-based filmmaker Liz Welch Tirrell  -- it only includes one Austin shot in the film, but it's still Austin love-worthy.

Jette: Wow, Arbor is still showing Jane Campion's Bright Star. I really am going to see it this week, I swear.
