Slackery News Tidbits: Austin Movies Everywhere

Over the past week, an amazing number of news items have rolled in about distribution for Austin movies or movies that have played in local fests. Check out this list to see if any of the movies you've liked at recent fests will be getting a wider release and a second chance to grab audiences.
- Richard Linklater's most recent films are both in the news this week. First of all, Me and Orson Welles, which played at SXSW this year, now has U.S. distribution through Cinemax. As Linklater told us during the Extract red carpet, the movie will hit theaters around Thanksgiving. Jette thinks it's the best Zac Efron movie she's seen to date.
- In addition, Linklater's documentary about Longhorn baseball and coach Augie Garrido, Inning by Inning, is now available on iTunes. The movie was released on DVD in May. Jette doesn't like baseball much, but liked this movie a lot anyway.
- Speaking of movies you can watch from a computer or other device, the locally shot feature For Love & Stacie, written and directed by Raymond Schlogel, is now available for viewing online at Underground Planet.
- If you prefer your movies in theaters, you can catch the U.S. premiere of Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at Alamo Ritz. Proceeds from the Faantastic Fest-sponsored screening benefit Austin School of Film. Special guests include actors Rusty Kelley (Dear Pillow, The Cassidy Kids), Rider Strong, Marc Senter, Noah Segan, and producer Lauren Moews.
- Rusty Kelley reminds us of Bryan Poyser -- the actor has been in three of Poyser's films -- who is not only a filmmaker but Director of Artist Services at Austin Film Society. Big congrats to Poyser since the Austin Chronicle Best of Austin Critics Poll just named him "Best Film Resource." (Slackerwood will be gunning for that award next year.)
- Poyser had a small role in Andrew Bujalski's latest film, Beeswax, which was shot in Austin and played SXSW this year. Rumor has it -- and by rumor we mean Jette asked Bujalski at the One, Two, Three screening last week -- that Beeswax will return to Austin for a limited run in early October. Jette reviewed the movie for Cinematical after its SXSW screening.
- Another SXSW favorite from 2008, Nerdcore Rising, is getting "host your own screening" distribution from B-Side. Jette reviewed this one, too -- a fun road-trip documentary about MC Frontalot (pictured above with director Negin Farsad) and other bands in the "nerdcore" hip-hop subgenre.
- The 2008 film Kings of the Evening, which was shot in Bartlett (between Georgetown and Temple), has found distribution with Indican Pictures, and will receive a small theatrical release in early 2010. More details about the movie are available on Joe M. O'Connell's blog, where we found the news.
- Austin Filmmaker Jen White's debut feature, Between Floors, won Best Director at the Atlanta Underground Film Festival. It was also Executive Produced by Paul Alvarado-Dykstra, and will be playing the Boston Film Festival next week.
