Fantastic Fest 2014 Venue Guide

IMG_6771

Since Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar and The Highball just reopened, I figured it was a good time to revisit the Slackerwood listings for these venues for Fantastic Fest.

As you probably already know, Fantastic Fest screenings take place almost entirely at Alamo South Lamar. Some of the events are in the theaters, some are in The Highball, and a couple may be offsite (I don't know where Fantastic Debates is this year, for example).

I've also included The Marchesa since MondoCon will take place there over the weekend. Shuttle buses are available to drive attendees of both fests back and forth between the two venues. It's not a short ride: 7-8 miles (depending on your route) and around 20 minutes if there's no traffic.

But for the most part, if you've got a Fantastic Fest badge, you'll likely pull into the Alamo South Lamar garage in the morning and spend the day there, unless you want to duck out for a meal or a snack. Fortunately there are a few restaurants in easy walking distance, as you'll see in the listing below.

Hallway

If you haven't been to Alamo South Lamar since its reopening, it's a little bit odd (not in a bad way). It looks like a brand new theater, much like Lakeline or Slaughter. You walk down a hall of theaters and pass several new ones. And then you walk through what looks like a crazy amusement-park arch (pictured above) and suddenly you're back in the old Alamo South, with the same Bone Shack sign on the wall, the same servers' station, and the same theaters ... except they've been renumbered. (And although it's been repainted, there's still a hot dog on the wall.) Good old Theater 2 is now Theater 5, and you'll hear regulars call it "old Theater 2" just like I used to hear people call MLK Blvd "old 19th Street" when I moved here.

The renovated Alamo South Lamar and Highball are fairly new to us at Slackerwood, too -- and the restaurant scene over there is changing rapidly -- so feel free to leave tips and suggestions in the comments.
