Blue Starlite Drive-in Announces Summer Schedule at Austin Studios
Austin's own mini urban drive-in, Blue Starlite, is revving up for the summer. The drive-in will kick off this season's schedule at their new location on July 4. The Blue Starlite is even building a movie screen for their new site at Austin Studios.
Besides the holiday-appropriate screening on July 4 and a special late-night horror screening, most of the films for the month of July have a distinctly Austin flavor, thanks to a partnership with Austin Film Society.
Bike-in or walk-in tickets for the movies are $5, but you'll need to bring your own seating. Car packages range from $25 to $55. Note for cars: For any double features, an additional $10 lets you stay for the second film.
Here's the lineup:
- Wednesday, July 4, 9 pm: Independence Day. "Welcome to earth." [tickets]
- Friday, July 13, 9 pm: Dazed and Confused (dir. Richard Linklater), with a Friday the 13th showing of Night of the Living Dead following at 11:15. [tickets]
- Saturday, July 14, 9 pm: Linklater double feature! Family favorite The School of Rock starts the night, followed at 11:15 by the more cerebral animated film Waking Life (pictured at top). [tickets]
- Thursday, July 26, 9 pm: Mike Judge's Office Space. Be sure to wear your flair! [tickets]
- Friday, July 27, 9 pm: Day One of Robert Rodriguez weekend starts with his Grindhouse: Planet Terror. [tickets]
- Saturday, July 28, 9 pm: Let the kiddos stay up late to watch Rodriguez's Spy Kids. Those two child actors are twenty-somethings now, if you can believe it. [tickets]
Tickets aren't available yet for the upcoming August features:
- Friday, August 10, 9 pm: The Princess Bride, as you wish.
- Saturday, August 11, 9 pm: The Wild Man of the Navidad
- Sunday, August 12, 9 pm: Harry and the Hendersons. John Lithgow and Melinda Dillon head up the family that runs into Harry, a sasquatch, in this 1987 film. David Suchet (aka Hercule Poirot) plays the baddie!
- Thursday, August 23, 9 pm: Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge. Of course you will be singing along in your car.
- Friday, August 24, 9 pm: John Sayles' 1996 border drama Lone Star.
- Saturday, August 25, 9 pm: The drive-in friendly, made-to-be-seen-on-the-big-screen 1956 classic Giant.
And then for September:
- Friday, Sept. 8, 9 pm: 1985's The Goonies!
- Saturday, Sept. 9, 9 pm: Grease. Another one you'll be singing along with in your car. We won't judge.
