Movies This Week: Best Worst Oceans Backup Losers

I just realized how busy I've been lately -- one Netflix disc has been sitting by my TV for nearly two months. This week isn't any different, as it's Cine Las Americas time. Hope you get a chance to check out the diverse fare the film fest is showing at the Metropolitan, Alamo on South Lamar and the Mexican American Cultural Center. If you can't make it there, here are the new releases in Austin this week.
The Back-up Plan -- Biological-clock sitcom with J Lo and Alex O'Loughlin, full of poop jokes and baby doll dresses. And that's the nicest thing I can say about it. Read my review for more, and don't hold it against Michaela Watkins, who's wasted in her role. (wide)
Best Worst Movie -- Troll 2, arguably the worst movie ever made, has become a beloved cult classic. Watch this tale about enthusiastically loving something by celebrating its flaws, and the delusions of those who can't see said flaws. Oh, and let's not forget Austin's own Zack Carlson's related tattoo. There's also a party at The Highball for it this weekend. Read my review for more. (Alamo Lamar)
Darling -- Steamy Bollywood fare from 2007 about a married woman who thinks her married lover will leave his wife. (Cinemark Tinseltown 20/XD, Pflugerville)
Kenny Chesney: Summer in 3D -- It kills me to see yet another celeb concert doc taking up screen space. But there it is, and there I won't be. (wide)
The Losers -- Betrayed members of a black ops team fight back. If nothing else, it has the prettiest cast in a long time, including Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chris Evans and Zoe Saldana. Debbie can tell you more in her review -- look for it later today. (wide)
Oceans -- Apparently this dramatized documentary explores the vanishing wonders within the world's oceans. (wide)
Vincere (pictured above) – Did you know Mussolini had a secret marriage? I didn’t. This political melodrama explores it. (Dobie)
Check our event calendar for special film events, and our personal picks below. Don't forget you can always alert us to special screenings, new film series, etc.
Debbie -- My entomology professor gave extra credit for viewing the 1996 nature documentary Microcosmos, and I loved the film so much that I bought both the video and the accompanying book. I'm excited to see Microcosmos producer and presenter Jacques Perrin's latest work, the ecological documentary Oceans, which he co-wrote and co-directed with Jacques Cluzaud.
Don -- Don is getting ready for Eeyore's Birthday Party this weekend and can barely remember movies exist right now.
Jenn -- I highly recommend Best Worst Movie even if you haven't seen Troll 2. But I'm going to be busy with Cine Las Americas.
Jette -- One of my favorite Woody Allen comedies is Sleeper, and Alamo Ritz is showing it this Sunday to kick of the theater's new Jazz Brunch series. Not only is the movie full of Preservation Hall Jazz Band music, but Ritz will have live music from Stanley Smith and the Jazz Pharoahs. A perfect way to start Sunday.
