Movies This Week: Alice in Brooklyn's Visual Fish District

Ready for SXSW next week? I'm not. And all these new movies to check out don't help.
Alice in Wonderland -- This 3D mess has a plot as murky as its imagery and plays fast and loose with Lewis Carroll's classic story of the girl who falls down the rabbit hole. More in my review, where for the first time I do not have something positive to say about a Johnny Depp performance. (wide).
Brooklyn's Finest -- Another NYC police procedural, with stars like Richard Gere and Ethan Hawke as well as lesser-known powerhouses like Lili Taylor and Brian F. O'Byrne. Elizabeth checked it out for us, so take a look at her review.
District 13: Ultimatum -- Despite more wire-free stunts of Cyril Raffaelli and Parkour founder David Belle, the sequel to District 13 doesn't even come close to the original. In fact, it actively thwarts suspension of belief. Check out Jette's review this weekend. (Alamo South Lamar)
Fish Tank -- (pictured above) The latest from Andrea Arnold (Red Road) focuses on a teen whose life is dramatically altered after her mother's boyfriend moves in. It earned a BAFTA for Outstanding British Film, so you should probably check it out while you can. (Dobie)
Visual Acoustics -- Doc profiling architectural photographer Julius Shulman by first time director Eric Bricker. (Arbor)
Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge -- Bollywood fam-rom-com about a couple trying to avoid visiting relatives. (Cinemark Tinseltown 17)
2010 Best Picture Showcase -- AMC is doing a promotional mini-marathon on Saturday, where one ticket can get you into 5 Oscar nominated films, and unlimited popcorn. It's starts early, so get there early, or get more information at the AMC website. (AMC Barton Creek)
Best Picture & Best Director Festival -- Cinemark's answer to AMC's best picture showcase has a slightly different spin for $25 and five films starting at noon on Saturday. More information on the Cinemark website. (Cinemark Tinseltown 20 and XD Pflugerville)
Check our event calendar for special film events, and our personal picks below. Don't forget you can always alert us to special screenings, new film series, etc.
Debbie: I'm looking forward to seeing Brooklyn's Finest with such fine actors as Ethan Hawke, Richard Gere, and the talented Don Cheadle -- maybe I should read Elizabeth's review afterwards?
Jette: Sunday is a great day for film geeks. What I hope to do is catch the Alamo Ritz brunch screening of Singin' in the Rain at noon, then head over to Alison Macor's book signing, then find an Oscar party where I can hang out.
