Movies This Week: Young Victoria, Sherlock and Nine Complicated Chipmunks

in

Can you believe it? Christmas is upon us. Only one more week left in 2009. The holiday-opening films are lighter than I expected, but there is something new for most tastes.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel --  Debbie was the trouper to sit through this, uh, sequel.  I refuse to type that "other" word some marketing hack thought up. See Debbie's review. (wide)

It's Complicated -- This romantic comedy about a divorced couple who rekindle at least their sex life with each other doesn't look so great from the trailers, despite two charismatic stars (Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin). See Debbie's review to find out if it's just too complicated. (wide)

Nine -- A love song to female archetypes on pedestals and an homage to Fellini's 8 1/2, Nine is a musical best appreciated by those who love musicals and Fellini. And those who love gorgeous actresses. See my review for more details, or read Jette's review at Cinematical. (wide)

Sherlock Holmes --  If you're going in thinking this is an adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, you will be disappointed.  If you're looking for classic Guy Ritchie, you'll also be disappointed.  If you just want to see Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr. get their bromance on in period garb, you'll be well satisfied.  Read my review for more. (wide)

3 Idiots -- This Bollywood comedy doesn't even have a description on IMDb, other than still being in production with a release date showing as this week.  I think we can all guess from the title what it's about, eh?  (Cinemark Tinseltown 17)

The Young Victoria --  Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada, Sunshine Cleaning) gets a well-deserved lead role, with hopes to follow in Cate Blanchett's footsteps as a Queen of England.  But can she, and writer Julian Fellowes (Vanity Fair, Gosford Park) pull it off? Jette will let you know in her weekend review. (Arbor)

Check our event calendar for special film events, and our personal picks below. Don't forget you can always alert us to special screenings, new film series, etc.

And now, our picks of the week:

Jenn:  I'm actually going to try to catch The Road. Finally.

Jette: Chip and I are continuing our annual holiday tradition of seeing Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle at Alamo Ritz, where they serve sliders and fries with the film. This year, Alamo is showing the movie on December 26; it's part of their usual High for the Holidays series.

Debbie: I'm in snow-blanketed Lakewood, Colorado, but will venture out to catch at least one film. Mama Kuhn has asked me to accompany her to see The Blind Side, which I've not seen yet.
