Quick Snaps: Flashback to Richard Rush at Alamo

Richard Rush at Alamo

Writing about Weird Wednesday last week, especially Richard Rush's film Psych-Out, made me think about the time Rush was in town for some special screenings of his films at Alamo Drafthouse. This was in August 2006 at the old theater on Colorado. I brought my old camera that night and the photos are terribly grainy, but I still like them. At the time, I started to write about the evening, but never got it done (a placeholder was notoriously in the Slackerwood queue for about two years).

So instead, I'm sharing the three best photos from that evening. Rush was there for two of his films: The Stunt Man and Psych-Out. I'd seen the first -- I own the DVD -- but had never seen the second one, although I'd been reading about it for years and was fascinated. (The unnamed Weird Wednesday film on the marquee wasn't a Rush film ... a quick search indicates it was Chained Heat.)

Weird Wednesday programmer Lars Nilsen was the evening's host and moderated a Q&A with Rush:

They were joined onstage by stuntman/actor Chuck Bail, who has worked on several of Rush's films. Amusing aside: I think the photographer in the front of this picture is local technoculture writer/advocate Jon Lebkowsky:
