Here's the latest Austin film news:
- Joe O'Connell has the scoop on Richard Linklater's intended next film: Bernie, set in East Texas, perhaps starring Jack Black. Linklater referred to it as his "Fargo in East Texas."
- O'Connell also has some photos to share from the set of Doonby, the John Schneider-starring film currently shooting at local Spiderwood Studios.
- Local teenage filmmaker Emily Hagins (Pathogen, The Retelling), the subject of the documentary Zombie Girl, is trying to raise funds to finish her third feature, My Sucky Teen Romance (it's a vampire movie).
- Speaking of Hagins (and funding), Austin Film Society has just published a video promoting the Texas Filmmakers Production Fund, and Hagins is one of the filmmakers interviewed. You also might see TFPF recipients Kyle Henry, Sandra Guardado, Kat Candler, and David and Nathan Zellner, among others. You can find it on YouTube.
- In case you hadn't noticed, Fantastic Fest has updated its website for the 2010 festival. The site also includes a bunch of cool photos from 2009. And have you heard about Fantastic Arcade? This is the newest part of the film festival, which will include a giant video-game arcade in the ballroom portion of The Highball, game demos, a competition and other events.
- Over at the Austin Chronicle film blog, Picture in Picture, Richard Whittaker gives those of us who were unable to attend last week's Joe R. Lansdale book signing/screening event a little taste on video of what we missed.
- Finally, a little bit of self-promotion: We're really pleased with this article by Marc Savlov in this week's Austin Chronicle about local film websites. The sites profiled include Spill.com, Film School Rejects ... and Slackerwood. "Slackerwood: Keeping Austin weird and dang proud of it." We may have to use that as a tagline.
