Texas Film Hall of FameBy Viral Bhakta

Thursday, March 8, 2012 will definitely be a night to remember. The event: Texas Film Hall of Fame. The location: ACL Live at the Moody Theater. This was my first time hearing about this event, so I wasn't sure what exactly to expect, but thrilled to be part of the process.

The event was hosted by the beautiful and charming Anjelah Johnson, currently the face of the Taco Cabana ad campaign, and honored four Texas oriented-individuals for their dedication and successful careers in the film industry: Meat Loaf, Douglas McGrath, Barry Corbin and Danny Trejo. The film Rio Bravo was also given the Star of Texas Award and was accepted by the inspirational and lovely Angie Dickinson.

Previously held at Austin Studios, this was the first time that the Austin Film Society hosted the event at the Moody Theater. I have to say the new venue was quite a change. The three floors each were unique in their own way, by that I mean each included veteran filmmakers and well-known Hollywood figures.

Fortunately, I was able to work indoors on the second floor, mezzanine floor, out of the freezing cold weather (all the VIP suites were conveniently located on this floor as well). Even though I was in eyesight of some well-known Austin filmmakers, I wanted to introduce myself but did not want to impose, as they seemed to be enjoying themselves. So I simply told myself, "Maybe next time."

Texas Film Hall of FameAs the night went on, Brett Cullen, a University of Houston graduate and actor that has appeared in over 100 movies and TV shows, introduced and spoke about his friendship with Meat Loaf. As he made his way to the stage, Meat Loaf found himself in tears during his "thank you" speech and mentioned his humble beginnings in the industry as what drove him to success and defined the origins of his name "Meat Loaf." Though what resonated with the audience the most was when he announced his move to Austin. As he said, "Who better to live in this bat city than Meat Loaf?"

Robert Rodriguez's speech retold the story of his old friend, Danny Trejo, from day one from "ex-con to icon." As he spoke, I personally relived each moment with the passion and enjoyment that they felt. The magnitude of their friendship illuminated the audience. As Trejo accepted his award, he mentioned that, "This is my biggest achievement yet ... Texas has been my home for a long time ... my whole family lives in San Antonio."

Eventually the evening came to an end with a performance by the Grammy award-winning Latin funk masters Grupo Fantasma. As for me, the night was still young and filled with a few hours of manual labor.

I will never forget this event, not because of the celebrities, not because of the amazing speeches and performance, but because I understood the dedication and hard work on which the Austin film industry is built. Thank you Texas, and thank you Austin. But more importantly, thank you Austin Film Society!

TEXAS

Great article by Viral. I would say that I too will not forget this event. It was filled with so many beautiful women, actors and especially Texans. This was my first time attending this event and have to say I loved it. As a native of Texas or El Paso, Texas that is, have seen the pride we Texans have for this incredible state. Since the awards, I went back to Houston, my current residence, with more pride for this state. I felt that Texas is the place and that there is no other place to live. I came across Matthew Mcconaughey and Meat Loaf walking about the halls of the theater as if they were spectators, simply waking around like they were nobody special. Great article by this intern, it really sums up how I felt as well at this special event.

Great Article

I was there during most of the show and it was as equally amazing as Viral describes it. They sure know how to throw a party in Austin.

Amazing Night, Great Article

Wow!

Thanks V for your article & lending your time and talent to the event. Clearly, much fun was had that evening and I think a lot of people gained a new perspective on AFS. We really appreciate it!
