Here's the latest in Austin and Texas film news.
- Filmmakers Lee Daniels and/or Sean Durkin may possibly direct a long-awaited, untitled Janis Joplin biopic, according to Joe M. O'Connell's blog. Actresses Amy Adams and Nina Arianda are rumored to portray the famed Port Arthur, Texas-native in a movie duel that spans about a decade.
- IndieWire reports that actor Michael Fassbender has joined the cast of Terrence Malick's new untitled film, formerly called Lawless. Malick and his cast, which include Ryan Gosling and Natalie Portman, have been sighted filming at various locations around Austin.
- The documentary Rising from Ashes, from local director T.C. Johnstone, won the grand prize for Best Documentary Feature last week at the Heartland Film Festival in Indianapolis. The movie just screened at Austin Film Festival -- read Elizabeth's review and her interview with Johnstone.
- The Marfa Film Festival announced its return after a two-year hiatus, accoring to the Texas Film Commission. Founded in 2007, the festival's fourth run begins June 26, 2013.
- Austin-shot Otis Under Sky (Jette's review), about a man and his heartfelt vlogs, will screen 7 pm Thursday in the AFS Screening Room for a Texas Filmmakers Production Fund fundraiser. San Marcos filmmakers Anlo Sepulveda and Paul Collins and actor/writer Anis Mojgani will be in attendance. Preceding the screening is Sepulveda's experimental San Marcos River documentary Yakona (my article).
- Bring unopened, non-perishable food items to be donated to the Capital Area Food Bank in exchange for popcorn at the 7 pm, November 13 TIFN and Violet Crown-partnered screening of the documentary America's Parking Lot (Don's review). The film, which premiered at SXSW this year, tells the story of two diehard Dallas Cowboys football fans whose friendship and traditions alter when the team moves from Texas Stadium to Arlington. Austin director Jonny Mars will be in attendance.
