Movies This Week: Spoiled Silent John with Kids

in

Friends with Kids.

I was all set to tell you to get out of town and see the benefit screening of Dirt! The Movie out in Wimberley, but it's postponed due to much needed rain. So make plans to see it April; wel'll let you know when it's rescheduled. In the meantime, can I interest you in five free movie opportunities?

Alamo Slaughterhouse is kicking off it's first Kids Camp with The Wizard of Oz. Austin Public Library has four free movies this week: Tuesday you have to choose between Cars 2 at Family Movie Night at Twin Oaks Branch, or Drive at Weeknight Cinema at Milwood Branch. On Thursday, it's Pick Your Flick night at Ruiz Branch, or the Based on Books Movie Series, which is showing Moneyball at Yarborough Branch. And that other film thing is going on this week. You know. SXSW. There are a number of free movies and events if you don't have a badge or pass.

Movies We've Seen:

John Carter -- Andrew Stanton does Edgar Rice Burroughs. with Taylor Kitsch as the title character (of the adaptation, not the source material A Princess of Mars). Mike says it's "a master-class creation" with only one fault: a weak score. Look for his review this weekend. (wide)

Friends with Kids (pictured at top) -- Jennifer Westfeldt's first script was self-consciously charming -- her latest is more self-consciously awkward, as she stars as a woman who chooses to have a baby with her best friend while leaving romance out of the equation. Read my review for more.

Other Movies Opening in Austin:

Deadline -- A Nashville reporter investigates a 20-year-old murder in Alabama, at their own peril. The cast includes Eric Roberts. (Regal Metropolitan)

Silent House -- Another "true story" horror film, based on the 2010 Uruguayan film by Gustavo Hernández. (wide)

spOILed -- Mark Mathis, former "newsman" and first-time filmmaker and founder of Citizens' Alliance for Responsible Energy, attempts to debunk what he considers the myth of "big oil" after having worked as a media rep for a small oil company. (Barton Creek)

A Thousand Words -- That's how many words Eddie Murphy's character has to speak before he dies. No, Morgan Freeman isn't playing God, but it does have Cliff Curtis as a spiritual guide. Hey now, I like Cliff Curtis. (wide)

Incorrect posting

I am the Director of spOILed. The characterization of the film on this page is incorrect. The film is NOT about the oil business. spOILed is about how the general public is deceived about their relationship to oil. We are not "addicted to oil" as claimed by George Bush. However, we are spOILed and the spoiling will soon come to an end as the world struggles to produce enough oil to meet rapidly growing demand from developing nations. I am an independent filmmaker. I have never lived around oil/gas production and I have never worked as a "rep for a small oil company" as this site claims. I worked for about 15 years as a media consultant. Yes, I did consult with a small oil/gas organization among the dozens or other groups I consulted with over the years including the Department of Justice, Academic groups, Law Enforcement, PR Groups, Business Groups, Sports leagues (including the NFL). I even consulted with Victoria's Secret Catalogue. Perhaps there is something sinister in that. It was through my consulting with the oil/gas group that I discovered how unbelievably ignorant/deceived I was about the energy sources enabling the life I was leading. This is how filmmakers discover issues to make movies about. They encounter something that they feel compelled to tell the world.
