'The Man Who Never Cried' Wins Big

While visiting the set of The Man Who Never Cried last fall, I was amused by the t-shirt worn by director Bradley Jackson (above on the right, with lead Keir O'Donnell, left). The phrase across his chest read "Please Lord, Let me Prove to You That Winning The Lottery Won't Spoil Me."

Jackson will have to do just that, with the recent announcement that the $100,000 grand prize for the Doorpost Film Project went to The Man Who Never Cried. The local film that received tips and script edits from the likes of Austin filmmaker Richard Linklater and other industry veterans. In addition to winning first place, the film took several other awards at last week's awards ceremony, including the Audience Choice Award. The Man Who Never Cried was also awarded:

  • Best Director: Bradley Jackson 
  • Best Screenplay: Bradley Jackson
  • Best Actress: Jess Weixler 
  • Best Actor Runner Up: Keir O'Donnell
  • Best Editing: Dave Ward
  • Best Music Score Runner Up: Halli Cauthery

The panel of esteemed film industry experts included actress Frances Fisher (Titanic, Unforgiven), composer Harry Gregson-Williams (The Town, Shrek), producer Zachary Matz (City Island, Mrs Palfrey at The Claremont), stage and screen actress Juliet Mills (Avanti), and director and screenwriter Martin Donovan (Apartment Zero, Death Becomes Her). Also on the panel were Darryl Macdonald who is the executive director of The Palm Springs Film Festival and The Palm Springs Short Film Festival, as well as film programmer Ian Birnie who is head of the film department at Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
