Child with Play CameraLast year, Slackerwood featured a Guide to Austin Summer Film Camps that listed local day camps for kids interested in making movies. Although Tuesday's snowfall might make you think that summer's far away, it's never too soon to enroll in these highly sought-after programs.

Here are a couple of Austin summer film camps that have already opened registration for this year ... for kids a bit older than the budding filmmaker pictured at right.

Austin Film Society: Digital Filmmaking Camps

Come make films with the pros at Austin Studios this summer. AFS youth filmmaking camps teach hands-on narrative and experimental techniques using digital video. In a fun project-based environment, students work in teams to craft short digital films and animations, from developing the kernel of a project idea to final edit and exhibition of their films. AFS camps at Austin Studios include select film screenings, a guest filmmaker visit, and a behind-the-scenes studios tour. Finished films are screened for family and friends at a culminating Friday night showcase in the AFS screening room. Camps run in one-week sessions, and are co-sponsored by the Texas Film Commission.

Sessions: June 7-11; June 21-25; July 5-9; July 19-23; August 2-5 (Advanced)
Ages: 12-15
Cost: $250; $225 for AFS members
